AFCON 2025: Three major absences for Mali against Zambia
Mali will launch their campaign in the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, December 22, facing Zambia. The Eagles head into this crucial Group A clash missing three key players.
The absentees are captain Yves Bissouma, right-back Hamari Traoré, and central defender Sikou Niakate. Head coach Tom Saintfiet confirmed their absence during Sunday’s press conference.
Despite the absence of these pillars, the coach insists this is not an obstacle for “Les Aigles”, making it clear: "We must win this match." Mali, seasoned contenders in the continental showpiece, are still chasing their first-ever title. Their opponents, Chipolopolo, who lifted the trophy in 2012, enter the tournament with high ambitions after several early exits.
Following the clash with Zambia, Mali will face hosts Morocco, who opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Comoros.
