Ghana: Carlos Queiroz set to continue as Black Stars head coach

After weeks of uncertainty, Carlos Queiroz is reportedly close to extending his Ghana stay and is already preparing his next squad.

The search for the next Black Stars coach may have reached its conclusion. According to GhanaMediaHub, Carlos Queiroz is expected to remain in charge and has started preparing the squad for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. An official announcement is still pending, however, as GFA president Kurt Okraku has not publicly identified the selected coach.

Speaking to 3Sports, Okraku said the appointment was “99% in place” and that the incoming coach was already working. Queiroz initially joined Ghana on a four-month contract before the 2026 World Cup. He guided the country into the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, before a 1-0 Round-of-32 defeat by Colombia.

Queiroz already planning for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers

His first assignment would come quickly. Ghana open their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Ivory Coast at Bouaké’s Stade de la Paix on 24 September 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT. The Gambia and Somalia are the other two teams in qualifying Group C.

Keeping Queiroz would provide valuable continuity after Ghana’s encouraging campaign in North America. The experienced Portuguese coach already knows the squad and is expected to announce his selections in the coming days. Four-time African champions Ghana have not lifted the continental trophy since 1982, and a stable technical project could strengthen their bid to return to the tournament’s leading contenders.
