A stunning upset at the Rabat Olympic Stadium. Algeria overturned the odds against Morocco with a 1-1 draw (3-2 on penalties) to clinch the bronze medal at the 2026 Women's AFCON.

A perfect second half

Morocco went ahead in the 31st minute thanks to Kawtar Azraf's goal, but Algeria came out a transformed side after the break. With renewed determination and physicality, the equalizer finally arrived in the 83rd minute, just as Morocco seemed destined for the podium. Lina Boussaha struck home after a decisive assist from Sofia Bekhaled, reviving Algeria's hopes. At 1-1 after regular time, the match went to penalties.

Morocco collapses as Algeria makes history

The penalty shootout turned into a nightmare for the Atlas Lionesses, who missed three times. Algeria kept their nerve and sealed the contest 3-2, claiming third place at the Women's AFCON for the first time in their history.

A historic campaign for the Greens, who had already secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil by reaching the semi-finals. Financially, third place also brings a major reward: Algeria receives $500,000 under the new prize structure, while fourth-placed Morocco takes home $400,000.

The grand final awaits

The tournament is not over yet, with the highly anticipated final between Cameroon and Malawi set for Sunday at 19:00 GMT at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
