South Africa made a stunning start to the qualifying campaign for the women's football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The Banyana Banyana thrashed Madagascar 4-0 on Friday at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Madagascar were supposed to host this first leg. But without an approved venue, the Malagasy side travelled to the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. South Africa took full advantage at home. Ronnell Donnelly scored a hat-trick for South Africa. The Banyana Banyana also benefited from an own goal by their opponents to seal the victory.
Madagascar brought back down to earth after their scoring spree
Madagascar came up against a stronger side after their first-round performance. The Malagasy side had thrashed Sudan 30-0 on aggregate. South Africa have taken a comfortable step towards qualifying for the next round. The return leg will be played on Tuesday at the same venue.
