2028 Olympic Qualifiers (women): Partial results from the first legs of the second round of the African qualifiers

The first-leg matches of the second round of the qualifiers for the women's football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics began on October 7 and are ongoing. Seven matches have produced results with widely varying margins from one game to another.

Big wins

Kenya delivered a heavy blow. At Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, the Harambee Starlets thrashed Seychelles 11-0. Valerie Nekesa scored twice (9th and 43rd minutes), as did Ines Mango (25th and 54th minutes) and Irene Madalena (62nd and 82nd minutes), while Mercy Airo scored a hat-trick (87th, 90+1 and 90+5 minutes). Elizabeth Mideva added the other goal in the 88th minute.

Ghana put on a similar display. The Black Queens defeated Mauritius 3-0 at the Côte d'Or complex. Abigail Kim (16th minute), Alice Kusi (24th minute) and Benedict Simon (30th minute) scored the goals.

Benin also took a 3-1 lead over Mali at Kégué Stadium in the capital, Lomé. Romain Gandounou scored twice (12th and 17th minutes), while Mylhad Sadikou added the third goal (47th minute). Aïcha Traoré scored Mali's goal (54th minute).

Burkina Faso followed the same path. The Stallions' women secured a 3-1 win over Equatorial Guinea at August 4 Stadium in Ouagadougou. Ouryana Konaté (7th minute) and Judicaël Ouoba (21st and 72nd minutes) scored for the hosts, while Linda Mendoua Absoulo Muriel pulled one back (64th minute).

Narrow but important wins

In the closely contested matches, Senegal achieved the perfect result. They won 1-0 in Tunisia, in the city of Radès. Ndaye Awa Cissé gave her country victory in the 67th minute at the Hamadi Agrebi Stadium.

Ethiopia achieved the same result against Rwanda. They won 1-0 in Kigali at Pelé Stadium, thanks to an own goal by Lydia Uzaesinga (45th minute).

Finally, Uganda defeated Zambia 2-1 in Kampala at Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo. Agnes Nabukenya (35th minute) and Sylvia Kabini (58th minute) scored for Uganda after Breshia Chilufya had opened the scoring (6th minute).

The second-leg matches are scheduled to take place next week. After that, three rounds will remain to claim one of the two qualification places for Los Angeles 2028.
