Côte d’Ivoire made a strong statement away to DR Congo. The Elephants won 4-1 in Lubumbashi and took an option on reaching the next round of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign.

Seri gets the Ivorian festival under way

Thanks to Ruth Seri, Côte d’Ivoire took control in the first half. She opened the scoring in the 3rd minute before doubling the lead in the 20th minute at the TP Mazembe Stadium.

DR Congo responded in the meantime. Anastasia Soulac equalised for the Leopards Women in the 16th minute. The two teams went into the break with a 2-1 lead for the Ivorians.

A one-sided second half

Côte d’Ivoire stepped up the pace after the break. Gnaly Estelle extended the Elephants’ lead in the 49th minute. Fofana Karidja put the game beyond doubt shortly afterwards in the 53rd minute to seal a 4-1 victory. Côte d’Ivoire took a significant step forward ahead of the second leg, scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
