A nightmare in Hungary

Trabzonspor entered Thursday evening's fixture facing an uphill battle after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg on home soil.

However, the situation quickly spiraled completely out of control.

The Turkish outfit suffered a total disciplinary collapse, finishing the match with only nine men after receiving red cards in the 13th and 58th minutes.

Ferencváros ruthlessly capitalized on their numerical advantage, inflicting a 4-0 thrashing to secure a 5-0 aggregate victory. The result eliminates Trabzonspor from the Europa League, forcing them to settle for the UEFA Conference League group stages.

Tekke's immediate resignation

In the immediate aftermath of the devastating defeat, a visibly shaken Fatih Tekke used his post match television interview to announce his immediate resignation.

"I resign from a very noble duty.. Today's defeat is an outcome that cannot be accepted. Misfortune and bad luck can be tolerated but I cannot accept this defeat" Tekke stated.

Expressing his deep frustration and disappointment, he added:

"I cannot sleep like this either. We did our absolute best and I hope everyone can forgive each other"

A stalled project

Tekke’s departure marks a sudden end to his tenure which began in March 2025. Over his 61 matches in charge across all competitions, he recorded:

  • 61 Total matches
  • 35 Wins
  • 14 Draws
  • 12 Losses

This result is an absolute disaster for Trabzonspor's sporting project, especially considering the high profile summer arrival of Mohamed Salah.

The lack of discipline shown by the players, picking up two red cards in a must win European knockout tie, points to a severe loss of control within the dressing room making Tekke's resignation almost inevitable.

Dropping into the Conference League is a significant financial and reputational blow for a squad built to compete at a higher continental level.
