AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Thursday’s results and goalscorer
The second matchday of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers continued this Thursday with just one match played in Group D.
Only one fixture was scheduled this Thursday, October 1, in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. In Conakry, Guinea hosted Kenya, with the obligation to respond after their 2-1 defeat to South Africa on the opening matchday.
Guinea win thanks to Serhou Guirassy
The Syli National fulfilled their mission by securing a 1-0 victory at the 28 September Stadium. The only goal of the match was scored by Serhou Guirassy in the first half, shortly after the half-hour mark. The Borussia Dortmund striker took advantage of a poorly handled ball by the Kenyan midfielder to beat Byrne Omondi.
Despite several attacking changes after the interval, notably the introduction of Ryan Ogam, Kenya never managed to equalise. Guinea therefore picked up their first three points of the campaign after their opening defeat in South Africa.
Thursday, October 1 result
Guinea 1-0 Kenya: Serhou Guirassy.
The Guinea-Kenya clash was the only match scheduled for this Thursday, following South Africa’s 5-0 win over Eritrea on Wednesday.
South Africa remain in control of Group D
After two matchdays, South Africa lead the group with 6 points. Guinea move up to second place with 3 points, ahead of Kenya and Eritrea, who each have one point.
The situation remains unusual in this group, as Kenya have already qualified for the finals as a co-host nation. Only the highest-ranked team among South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea will therefore join the Harambee Stars at AFCON 2027.
