After retiring from international football, Messi shines with a brace in MLS (Video)
Lionel Messi did not take long to find the back of the net again after bidding farewell to the Argentina national team. Just days after his final international appearance, the 39-year-old forward scored twice in Inter Miami’s emphatic 4-0 victory over D.C. United in MLS.
Messi ends Inter Miami’s winless run
The victory allowed the Florida club to put an end to a run of five consecutive league matches without a win. During that period, Inter Miami had recorded four draws and one defeat, against Columbus Crew (1-2) in their previous outing.
The Floridians took control of the match thanks to a brace from Uruguayan Luis Suárez in the first half.
After the break, Messi scored his team’s third goal in the 47th minute following an assist from Suárez. Thirteen minutes later, the Argentine struck again after dribbling past several opposing defenders before putting the ball into the back of the net.
With this brace, the Argentina captain took his tally to 23 MLS goals this season and strengthened his position at the top of the scoring charts.
The performance came just days after Messi’s farewell to the Argentina national team. Last Tuesday, the 39-year-old played his final international match against Benin. He scored his 126th and final goal in the Albiceleste shirt in the friendly, which Argentina won 3-0.
Thanks to this victory, Inter Miami moved to 49 points and climbed to second place in the standings. D.C. United, meanwhile, remain 12th with 30 points.
