Arsenal schedules medical for Bruno Guimarães

A verbal agreement is said to be in place between Arsenal and Newcastle for Bruno Guimarães, but the Brazilian will have to earn his spot in an already crowded midfield.

Arsenal is closing in on Bruno Guimarães. According to the English press, the Gunners have reached a verbal agreement with Newcastle for a fee of €90 million excluding bonuses. The total deal could ultimately reach around €93 million.

A slot has reportedly also been booked for his medical next week. Bruno Guimarães has already informed the Magpies of his desire to join Arsenal. The Brazilian is believed to have agreed terms with the English champions on a five-year contract, running until 2031. However, no final documents have yet been signed.

Fierce competition awaits

If the transfer goes through, Guimarães will join an already stacked midfield. Mikel Arteta currently has Declan Rice, Martín Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Martin Ødegaard, Eberechi Eze, Christian Nørgaard, Ethan Nwaneri, and Fábio Vieira at his disposal.

Competition in the Premier League would be especially fierce. Rice and Zubimendi are expected to have the inside track, while Merino, Ødegaard, and Eze provide several creative options. Despite his hefty price tag and experience, Guimarães would not be guaranteed a starting spot. He'll have to impress in training and prove his compatibility with the established stars.

Impressive all-around stats

Last season, Guimarães played 29 league matches, scoring nine goals and providing five assists. He also created 45 chances and posted defensive stats superior to Arsenal's current midfielders in several areas, particularly in duels and tackles won per game.

Since arriving in January 2022, the Brazilian captain has amassed 193 appearances, 31 goals, and an English League Cup with Newcastle. These strong credentials explain Arsenal's significant investment, but they don't guarantee him an automatic place in the starting eleven.
