Brighton: why was Malick Yalcouyé added to the Conference League squad?
Brighton have made a change to their Conference League squad. According to The Athletic, Zadok Yohanna has been removed from the list of players registered for the competition and replaced by Malick Yalcouyé. Manager Fabian Hürzeler believes the young Nigerian still needs time to regain full fitness and adapt to the demands of the Seagulls.
Yohanna must wait a little longer
Arriving at Brighton from AIK Stockholm during the summer, Zadok Yohanna made a name for himself in Sweden thanks to his attacking qualities. His performances attracted the attention of several English clubs before his move to the Seagulls. However, his adaptation has been slowed by physical problems. Hürzeler explained that the player was still undergoing rehabilitation and needed to gradually regain the necessary rhythm:
Zadok is still undergoing rehabilitation and needs a little more time to adapt to the intensity and demands we set. Some players adapt quickly, while others need more time. We want to give him that time and not rush anything.
The coach also recalled that the start of the season had been difficult for the young winger, who had already arrived from AIK with a physical problem.
Malick Yalcouyé rewarded
In contrast, Malick Yalcouyé has taken advantage of this change to join Brighton’s European squad. The 20-year-old midfielder, who has played for IFK Göteborg, Sturm Graz and Swansea, had been left out of the initial list before the league phase.
Hürzeler justified the decision by praising the Ivorian’s consistency and his ability to meet the team’s needs in different situations. “He clearly deserves his place in the squad,” said the coach, who considers Yalcouyé a player he can rely on in every match.
