CAF Confederation Cup: AFAD and CS Sfaxien draw
AFAD du Plateau and Tunisia’s Club Sportif Sfaxien drew 1-1 in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, played at the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. The result means the Académiciens must now secure qualification on Tunisian soil.
The Académiciens du Plateau and Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien were unable to be separated. In front of their home crowd, the Ivorians conceded the opening goal in the 51st minute, suggesting a favourable outcome for the visitors.
But far from throwing in the towel, AFAD continued to push for an equaliser. Their determination finally paid off in the 79th minute, with a leveller that allowed the Ivorian representatives to avoid defeat at home.
Despite this reaction, the 1-1 draw does not give the Plateau side a genuine advantage in the race for qualification ahead of the return match.
A decisive trip to Tunisia
In two weeks, AFAD will travel to Tunisia for the return leg against CS Sfaxien. It will be a crucial fixture for the Académiciens, who will need to show defensive solidity and attacking efficiency to keep their continental campaign alive.
With this result, the Ivorians remain in contention for qualification, but the task promises to be difficult against a Tunisian side that will have home advantage. AFAD have been warned: to continue dreaming of a place in the next round, they will need to deliver a convincing performance in Tunisia.
