CAN 2025 - Senegal: Pape Gueye sets a record in the final

Senegal are African champions thanks to Pape Gueye, the lone goal scorer in the final against Morocco. The player set a remarkable record with his goal.

For the first time in their history in an Africa Cup of Nations final, Senegal found the back of the net. By opening the scoring against Morocco (0-1) this Sunday in the 2025 final, Pape Gueye became the first Senegalese player ever to score in a CAN final, delivering a symbolic goal for the Lions of Teranga.

It should be noted that until now, Senegal's previous three finals had all ended without a single Senegalese goal. In 2002, against Cameroon, the team was held to a goalless draw (0-0) before losing on penalties. In 2019, they fell to Algeria (0-1), and then in 2021, they claimed their first continental title against Egypt (0-0, victory on penalties).

Fourth final, first goal, and a decisive strike that forever marks the 2025 edition as a milestone in Senegalese football history.
