CECAFA U17: Semi-final lineups known
The final four of the CECAFA tournament qualifying for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations are now known. After a fiercely contested group stage, the four semi-finalists are Rwanda, Uganda, Somalia and Ethiopia.
Rwanda and Uganda deliver, Ethiopia benefit
In Group A, the host nation did what was needed. After winning their first match 1-0 against South Sudan, Rwanda beat Sudan 2-0 on Wednesday evening at the Stade Pelé in Kigali and finished top of their group.
In Group B, Uganda also finished top. Held to a 1-1 draw by Ethiopia on Wednesday, the young Ugandans had made the difference on the opening matchday with an 8-0 thrashing of Burundi. With a better goal difference than Ethiopia, they finished first. Ethiopia, with four points, also qualified as the best runner-up from the three groups.
Somalia and Tanzania separated by a draw
In Group C, Somalia had beaten Kenya 2-0 after holding defending champions Tanzania to a 1-1 draw. The defending champions had also beaten Burundi 2-0. The two teams finished level on every criterion: the same number of points, the same goal difference, the same number of goals scored and a draw in their head-to-head match. A draw was needed to separate them. Somalia secured first place.
The semi-final matchups
The semi-finals will be played on October 17 at the Stade Pelé in Kigali. Uganda will face Ethiopia, while Rwanda will take on Somalia. The two finalists and the winner of the third-place play-off will automatically qualify to represent the CECAFA zone at the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
