Chelsea: Xabi Alonso wants to win without conceding a single goal
Interview
Chelsea’s 5-1 victory over Bournemouth brought Xabi Alonso some peace of mind, but the Spanish coach knows his team still needs to improve. The manager believes the Blues are close to regaining genuine defensive solidity and hopes to soon record a win without conceding a single goal.
An effective attack, but a defence that remains fragile
Chelsea made a strong impression on Saturday by dominating Bournemouth 5-1. The London side displayed impressive attacking efficiency and collective control that pleased their manager. Jordan Henderson particularly shone with a brace, including a free kick. Xabi Alonso revealed that the midfielder had used the international break to work specifically on this aspect of the game.
However, this display does not resolve all of the Blues’ difficulties. Their defensive record has remained concerning since the start of the season, to the point that they were among the most porous teams in the league, alongside Bournemouth.
“A win without conceding a goal will come”
Speaking after the match, Alonso emphasised the control his team exerted during the game. He believes that Chelsea are improving and will eventually be rewarded defensively. “It will come. Today, we were close. A win without conceding a goal will come,” explained the former Real Madrid manager.
After six matchdays, Chelsea have ten points and sit fifth in the Premier League. The result against Bournemouth therefore provides an encouraging foundation, even if the team still needs to prove that it can maintain this level of performance against opponents capable of making better use of the spaces it leaves.
