Cristiano Jr’s International Future: Portugal, Spain, or the USA?

As the son of one of football’s greatest ever players, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr.’s future in the sport has been topic of great interest. Following in his father’s footsteps, the youngster's already trained at the academies of several elite clubs including Juventus, Manchester United and now Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

Three Possible National Teams

While many assume Cristiano Jr. will represent Portugal, his options extend beyond his father’s homeland. According to FIFA rules, he's eligible to play for 3 different national teams:

Portugal: The most obvious choice, given his father’s legendary status in the country. As the son of Portuguese citizen, he's automatic eligibility to play for the national team.

Spain: Born in 2010, Cristiano Jr. spent the 1st eight years of his life in Madrid while his father starred for Real Madrid. FIFA rules allow player to represent country if they lived there for at least 3 years before turning 10, making Spain viable option.

United States: Though he hasn’t spent much time there, Cristiano Jr. was born in San Diego, California. FIFA regulations state that player can represent the nation of their birth meaning he could choose to play for the US national team.

England No Longer Option

Initially Cristiano Jr. had chance to become eligible for England after moving there when his father joined Manchester United. However he needed to reside in the country for 5 consecutive years, a possibility ruled out after relocating to Saudi Arabia.

What Lies Ahead?

It remains to be seen whether Cristiano Jr. Will reach the elite level of professional football but should he succeed, he'll have major decision to make. Will he continue his father’s legacy with Portugal or carve out his own path with Spain or the United States?
