Dortmund: Emre Can's future raises questions
Emre Can’s future at Borussia Dortmund is now uncertain. Still recovering after suffering a cruciate ligament tear in the spring, the 32-year-old defensive midfielder has also had to undergo another procedure because of adductor problems. He is not expected to return before 2027, while his contract with BVB expires next summer.
Dortmund waiting before deciding on Emre Can
Emre Can remains an important figure in the Borussia Dortmund dressing room, where he wears the captain’s armband. On the pitch, however, his prolonged absence currently prevents the player from bringing his experience to the team. According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Dortmund has not yet decided whether it will offer its captain a new contract extension.
The club first wants to monitor the progress of his physical condition and his ability to regain his level after this lengthy period on the sidelines. Can should not play another match during 2026. His return will now depend on the progress of his recovery over the coming months.
A decision expected in 2027
Emre Can’s current contract expires in the summer of 2027. According to the reports, BVB’s executives are therefore not expected to make a definitive decision immediately.
The first objective will be to see how the player recovers and whether he is capable of regaining a regular place on the pitch. His situation will therefore be reassessed next year, when Dortmund will have more information to determine whether an extension is possible.
