The Said El Mala saga is far from over. According to the German press, Borussia Dortmund remains determined to land the 19-year-old winger, who is currently under contract with FC Cologne. Despite having their initial bid rejected by the Rhineland club, BVB’s management is still working on the deal and remains confident in their chances of pulling it off.

Cologne stands firm

With no release clause in his contract, Said El Mala’s situation puts Cologne in a strong negotiating position. According to Bild, Dortmund has now tabled a €34 million offer, with a possible €10 million in add-ons. Cologne, however, is holding out for €50 million before letting their star depart.

Still according to Bild and Express, Borussia Dortmund has already made progress in talks with the player’s camp. Both sides are said to have reached a broad agreement on the terms of a five-year contract. Now, the challenge is to convince Cologne, who seem unwilling to lower their demands.

Our analysis

FC Cologne holds the upper hand in this transfer saga thanks to Said El Mala’s long-term contract. However, if Dortmund comes back with an offer close to €50 million, it will be tough for the club’s management to keep rejecting BVB’s advances. The transfer window is still open, and this story could accelerate quickly in the coming weeks.
