At the start of this season, FC Barcelona have recorded 10 wins from as many matches. All that, with an average of more than four goals scored per match. There are bound to be some satisfactions, but not everything is reassuring at the Spanish club.

With such a flying start to the season, it is difficult not to think about a potential FC Barcelona triumph in the Champions League at the end of the campaign. “Barça are the favourites to win the Champions League. I remain cautious, but this is the year,” journalist Ricard Torquemada said on Catalunya Radio. However, this enthusiasm is not necessarily shared by everyone on the other side of the Pyrenees.

Journalists’ concerns about Barça

FC Barcelona still have some flaws in the defensive department. “I hope I’m wrong, but I think Barça are still missing something in defence to win a Champions League. A reliable centre-back. I think there are still shortcomings in defence. They are missing top-level players if they hope to win a Champions League. They can win it, but I think something is missing,” Abelardo, a former player for the club and now a coach, said on Onda Cero.

In post-match analyses, and more broadly since the start of the season, there has been a fear that the defence could collapse. “Barça still have to prove themselves in the big matches, against Real Madrid and PSG. Barça have to play at this level in those matches. It is true that so far there has been no opponent of that calibre,” explained Gerard Lopez, another former player for the club, on Cadena COPE.
