FIFA sanctions Spain after racist incidents against Egypt!
Spain has been sanctioned after Islamophobic chants were heard during the match against Egypt, an episode strongly condemned by Lamine Yamal and several Spanish figures.
The controversy that arose during the friendly match between Spain and Egypt, played on March 31 in Barcelona and ending in a goalless draw (0-0), has taken a new turn. According to Sky Sports, the Royal Spanish Football Federation has been sanctioned by FIFA after Islamophobic chants were heard in the stands at the Cornellà-El Prat stadium.
The Spanish federation has reportedly been handed a $20,000 fine, along with a partial stadium closure for the next Spain match organized under FIFA's authority. Among the chants heard that evening was « whoever doesn't jump is Muslim », repeated by part of the crowd.
An incident that sparked widespread outrage
The scenes quickly prompted numerous reactions in Spain. Lamine Yamal condemned what he described as completely disrespectful and unacceptable behavior. The young Spanish international stressed the need not to normalize this type of chanting in a football stadium.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had also condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable, while several national-team players spoke out. Pedri was among those who called for racism and all forms of discrimination in the stands to be fought.
An investigation opened as early as April
FIFA had opened an investigation at the beginning of April, a few days after the match. The sanction reported today therefore comes several months after the incident.
At this stage, FIFA has not yet officially confirmed the details of the sanction reported by Sky Sports. However, if upheld, the decision would once again serve as a reminder that discriminatory behavior in stadiums can now result in direct sporting and financial sanctions.
