Real Madrid defender and Spanish international Raúl Asensio revealed that he recently underwent surgery following a leg fracture, sharing full details of the procedure in a recent interview with AS.

The Spaniard spoke candidly about the errors he made during the surgery and how all of this directly impacted his performance with Real Madrid.

Raúl Asencio speaks about the surgery he underwent

Looking back, the defender traced the beginning of his ordeal to twelve months earlier. From January onward, he had been managing the fracture through conservative treatment, but the pain kept intensifying. Even so, he pushed forward, unwilling to step away.

"It all started a year ago, and since January the fracture had been holding up with conservative treatment. The pain was getting worse. I was suffering, but I couldn't stop because the team was above everything, and I always look out for this club and for this badge. But there came a point where the fracture was bigger, and I saw that I had to have surgery."

Then came a moment that lifted his spirits — a visit from Mourinho.

"Mourinho's visit gave me a shot of energy. In those moments of doubt, when you're racking your brain thinking about how the recovery is going to go and how long I'm going to be out of the game, having Mou come to see me and show me that closeness we've all seen in the locker room since the start of the season is really comforting. Mou is approachable, humble, kind, and ambitious. Mou is a great person on a human level, besides being a great coach."

The conversation then shifted to another difficult chapter his DUI case from the previous summer.

"That was a really tough time. Several situations in my life piled up, and within a short period of time. Mou's not wrong. He was absolutely right. In the end, people comment on what's public and what they see. I made a mistake. I admitted it then and I admit it now, I've apologized and I'll keep apologizing. I'm a 23-year-old kid and I've made mistakes, just like anyone can at that age. But I have to be aware of where I am. I'm at Real Madrid, and that can't happen again. I'm fully aware of that and I'm only focused on turning this situation around. I'm the one most hurt by this. I dream of turning everything around and winning titles with this club and this jersey, hopefully for the rest of my career. That's why these kinds of situations won't happen again."
