Manchester City: British Prime Minister Andy Burnham under pressure

Over the past few days, the case involving financial breaches by Manchester City has taken on a political dimension.

According to recent revelations, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is suspected by the Conservative opposition of being too close to the Emirati owners of Manchester City. A former mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham had praised the Sky Blues’ contribution to the local economy. This comes as the United Arab Emirates allegedly threatened to suspend certain investments in the United Kingdom in the event of excessively severe sanctions against the Citizens.

Andy Burnham responds to the accusations

The British leader said on the BBC some time ago, speaking about Manchester City’s decision-makers: "I would be really disappointed if we lost them. They have been decisive partners in building a modern Manchester." Faced with the current controversy, the head of government attempted to clarify his position. "I have said it and I repeat it: it is incumbent on everyone not to interfere in the ongoing process," he explained on Thursday.

According to the BBC, several Premier League clubs nevertheless fear political pressure aimed at softening the sanctions against Manchester City.
