Manchester City: former president David Bernstein sees club relegated

Former Manchester City president David Bernstein believes that financial sanctions would not be enough if the club were found guilty of the vast majority of the 115 charges relating to the Premier League’s financial rules.

The former Citizens executive believes that the sanction could directly call Manchester City’s place in the English top flight into question. This comes as City are expected to appeal the decision. For his part, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak still says he wants to “prove the club’s innocence”.

However, David Bernstein is relying in particular on Manchester City’s spending during the last summer transfer window to argue that a simple fine would not be enough. The club did in fact spend around €512.8 million this summer, including nearly €145.7 million to sign Enzo Fernandez.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Citizens president therefore defended the idea of an exemplary sanction, believing that “money will not be enough” given the scale of the allegations against the club.
