Manchester United 1 - 1 Tottenham: the Red Devils let two points slip away
After taking the lead and gaining a numerical advantage, Manchester United once again faltered against Tottenham, managing only a 1-1 draw.
Manchester United still cannot find its footing in the Premier League. Facing a Tottenham side that has struggled since the start of the season, the Red Devils conceded another frustrating result at Old Trafford, being pegged back to 1-1 despite leading and having a numerical advantage.
The first half had nevertheless largely gone Tottenham’s way, with the visitors more enterprising and far more dangerous, but unable to convert their chances. Manchester United, offering very little in attack, spent a long time under pressure before taking advantage of a spell of momentum in the second half.
Mbeumo opens the scoring, Bentancur sees red
In the 73rd minute, Matheus Cunha found Bryan Mbeumo in the box. The forward controlled the ball, shifted onto his left foot and then placed a low, angled shot just inside Antonin Kinsky’s post to put the Red Devils ahead.
A few minutes later, the match descended into tension. Following an altercation with Luke Shaw, Rodrigo Bentancur reacted by headbutting the English defender. The Uruguayan was sent off, leaving Tottenham with ten men while Manchester United still led 1-0.
Solanke punishes Manchester United late on
Everything seemed to be in place for Michael Carrick’s men to finally claim three valuable points. But United once again lacked composure. In stoppage time, Sandro Tonali delivered a precise cross into the box. Dominic Solanke got the better of Lisandro Martínez in the air before heading beyond Senne Lammens to equalise in the 90th+2 minute.
Another disappointing result that increases the pressure on Michael Carrick. Despite their numerical advantage and lead, Manchester United failed to close out the match. The English coach remains under pressure after a highly inconsistent start to the season and results well below the club’s expectations.
For his part, Roberto De Zerbi is still chasing his first league victory with Tottenham, but this point earned with ten men may at least provide some relief to a struggling squad.
Manchester United 11th, Tottenham 18th
In the provisional standings after this match, Manchester United sit 11th with 6 points after six rounds. Tottenham remain in the relegation zone, in 18th place with 3 points, still without a Premier League win this season.
