Messi's last match with Argentina: why were three world champions absent?
Argentine star Lionel Messi played his final match with Argentina last night. For this final appearance in the Albiceleste shirt, the Argentine captain faced Benin at the Monumental Stadium in a friendly.
At 39, Messi left his mark on this special evening. The Inter Miami forward scored one goal and provided two assists, taking his tally to 126 goals in 208 appearances for Argentina.
The tribute evening for the Argentine captain was nevertheless marked by the absence of three 2022 world champions: Papu Gómez, Marcos Acuña and Gonzalo Montiel.
Gómez declined the invitation and ultimately followed the match in another role, as a pundit for a Kuwaiti television channel. Acuña and Montiel, meanwhile, were not called up by Lionel Scaloni for this match. The decision sparked reactions in Argentina.
Messi: “I fulfilled my dream with Argentina”!
After the match, Messi addressed the crowd at the Monumental and delivered a particularly moving message as he turned the page on his international career.
"It was an immense honor to wear this shirt for more than 20 years. Never playing in this shirt again is very painful, but it is the right time for me to retire," said the Argentine captain.
Messi also made a point of thanking his teammates, with whom he won the major titles of his international career: “I fulfilled my dream thanks to my teammates: becoming world champions, winning the Copa América and the Finalissima. Being with them was an immense honor, on and off the pitch.”
The former Albiceleste captain then addressed the new generation, stressing the importance of staying united. "I love you all and I’m going to miss you. I thank God for being Argentine, I’m proud to be Argentine and to have fulfilled my dream," he concluded.
