Morocco–Senegal final: CAS speaks out on verdict date!
The verdict in the case concerning the 2025 AFCON final could still take several days, or even a few weeks, according to CAS.
The saga surrounding the final of the 2025 AFCON is still far from reaching its conclusion. On Thursday, the federations of Morocco and Senegal defended their positions before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, but no immediate decision is expected.
As a reminder, Senegal won the final on the pitch (1-0), after a match marked by the temporary withdrawal of the Lions of Teranga to protest a penalty awarded to Morocco. On 17 March, the CAF Appeals Board subsequently awarded the victory to the Atlas Lions by default (3-0), in application of Articles 82 and 84 of the regulations. The decision was challenged by the Senegalese Football Federation, which referred the matter to CAS.
“Neither today nor tomorrow”
Asked about the timeline, Matthieu Reeb, CAS secretary general, sought to temper expectations of a swift verdict.
“We are here to resolve this dispute, which has been going on for several months, with the aim of issuing a decision as quickly as possible after the hearing. I don’t think it will be either today or tomorrow. The decision could take a few days, or even a few weeks, if the arbitrators wish to draft a full decision with the legal reasoning.”
The wait could still last several weeks
CAS has therefore set no precise date at this stage for publishing its decision. Much will depend on the time needed by the arbitrators to finalise their analysis and, potentially, draft a fully reasoned decision from a legal standpoint.
Thursday’s hearing was a decisive step in the proceedings, but the two federations will still have to wait before learning the final fate of the continental title. The suspense therefore remains between Senegal, the winner on the pitch, and Morocco, declared champions by default by the CAF Appeals Board.
