Liverpool produced a worrying performance, but a 99th-minute penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai salvaged a point for them.

Despite a disastrous display, Liverpool managed to steal a draw against Newcastle (2-2) on Sunday at St James’ Park, in their Premier League opener. Outplayed in intensity and rarely threatening, the Reds still found the grit to leave Merseyside with a point that seemed all but lost.

Szoboszlai snatches the equalizer in the 99th minute

Newcastle drew first blood in just the 5th minute through Anthony Elanga, who finished off a lightning-quick counter-attack. Liverpool hit back in the 54th minute: Cody Gakpo found the far corner with a low drive. The Magpies responded instantly. Three minutes later, Yoane Wissa led another counter before teeing up Joe Willock, who slotted home Newcastle's second.

Just as Newcastle looked set to claim a deserved win, Lewis Hall caught Víctor Muñoz with his knee in the box during stoppage time. Referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot. Dominik Szoboszlai showed no nerves, smashing the ball into the top right corner to level at the death in the 99th minute.

For their respective managerial debuts, Matthias Jaissle and Andoni Iraola both come away with a point, though Newcastle will feel they deserved more. The Magpies will host West Brom on Wednesday, August 26 at 7:45pm in the League Cup. Liverpool will welcome Nottingham Forest on Saturday, August 29 at 12:30pm in the league.
