Despite the ongoing crisis between the legend Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus, the coach is not at risk of leaving the Portugal national team for the time being, according to a source close to the matter quoted by Saudi sports daily Al-Riyadiah.

Does the crisis with Ronaldo threaten Jesus’s future at the helm of Portugal?

The source specified that the return of “El Bicho” to the national team currently appeared difficult, despite Jesus’s desire to have his services available again, adding that it was still possible to end the dispute by reaching an agreement on the conditions that matter to the coach.

The dispute began when Ronaldo remained on the bench against Norway, before leaving the national team camp after being informed that he would not start against Denmark. The player subsequently apologized for his departure, while accusing Jesus of failing to respect previous agreements.

For his part, Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, is continuing his efforts to organize a meeting between the two parties in order to bring their positions closer and put an end to the crisis. The discussions have not yet led to an agreement on the date of this meeting, however.

“A Sensitive Issue”: Conceição Reacts to the Ronaldo–Jesus Dispute

Against this backdrop, Portuguese coach Sergio Conceição refused to take sides with either man, believing that Ronaldo and Jesus’s status made the matter a sensitive one in his country.

“It’s a sensitive issue in my country. Cristiano is a legend and one of the best players in history,” Conceição told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

He added: “Jesus is also the national team coach and has a great deal of experience. So, in my view, it would not be right to take sides against either one.”
