Premier League: Hull City stuns Manchester United at halftime (2-0)
Hull City leads 2-0 at halftime against Manchester United, punished on two set pieces despite enjoying more possession.
Thunderstruck at the MKM Stadium! For their return to the Premier League, Hull City heads into the break with a 2-0 lead over Manchester United. The Red Devils have dominated possession, but the Tigers have been more aggressive, better organized, and—most importantly—far more clinical.
After an early warning denied by Senne Lammens, Hull broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Following a poorly defended corner by United, the Belgian goalkeeper saved Oli McBurnie’s effort on the line, but Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to smash home the rebound and ignite the Hull City vs Manchester United showdown.
United's left side springs a leak
Twenty minutes later, Bachir Belloumi nutmegged Youri Tielemans and drew a foul. Regan Slater whipped in the free kick, and Nobel Mendy rose to power home an unstoppable header in the 38th minute. The Algerian won’t get the assist, but he was the architect of the second goal. Signed for €25 million, Mendy makes an instant impact on his official debut.
The left side of United, made up of Ayden Heaven, Luke Shaw, and Patrick Dorgu, looked worryingly fragile. Michael Carrick will need to shake up his team and jolt some life into his listless players if United are to turn this match around.
