José Mourinho has named an almost unchanged squad for Sunday’s meeting with Málaga at the Bernabéu in La Liga Matchday 3.

José Mourinho’s Real Madrid appear to be gathering momentum in the 2026-27 La Liga campaign. After scraping past Espanyol 2-1 through Carlos Espí’s late winner, Los Blancos produced a far more convincing performance at the Santiago Bernabéu. They thrashed Real Sociedad 4-1, powered by a hat-trick from Kylian Mbappé, last season’s leading scorer in both La Liga and the 2026 World Cup, plus a goal from Vinicius Junior.

Vinicius received a warm ovation from the home crowd when he was substituted, underlining the positive atmosphere surrounding Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid. Los Blancos now host Málaga on Sunday, 30 August 2026, at 17:00. Kick-off is at the same time in Spain and France, with both countries operating in the same time zone at this point of the year.

Seven absentees and only one squad change

Compared with the squad selected against Real Sociedad, Mourinho has made just one alteration, with Javi Navarro replacing Sergio Mestre among the goalkeepers. Raúl Asencio, Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Thiago Pitarch, Rodrygo and Endrick remain unavailable. The Portuguese coach has therefore retained several academy prospects, including Mario Rivas, Cestero, Alexis Ciria and Carlos Espí.

Their most recent La Liga meetings therefore came in 2017-18, when Madrid won 3-2 at the Bernabéu and 2-1 away from home. The newly promoted side currently have one point after losing 2-0 to Atlético Madrid and drawing 1-1 with Deportivo La Coruña.
