Rulani Mokwena extends unbeaten streak in Egypt
Rulani Mokwena stretched his unbeaten run in Egypt after guiding Pyramids FC to a 3-2 victory over Olympic El Qanah FC in the League Cup on Wednesday.
The 2025 African champions broke the deadlock less than a minute into the game, thanks to Algerian forward Nadir Benbouali.
AbdelRahman Magdi doubled the lead in the 40th minute, ensuring Pyramids go into the half-time break in the driving seat with a two-goal cushion.
El Qanah pulled one back through Mohamed El Shebini 12 minutes after the restart, before Ali Hamouda restored the two-goal lead in the 76th minute.
The newly promoted Egyptian Premier League outfit set up a nervy ending as Hazem Abosena made it 3-2 seven minutes from time, but Pyramids held on.
Mokwena, as a result, is unbeaten in his first eight matches across all competitions in charge of the big spenders, having been appointed in July.
He was lured from Libyan giants Al-Ittihad Tripoli and was tasked with winning the CAF Champions League, the league title, and domestic cup competitions.
Whether the South African tactician will meet the objectives set by the club's hierarchy and surpass his predecessor Krunoslav Jurcic remains to be seen.
Pyramids, meanwhile, return to action with a clash against Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Premier League on Monday, 12 October.
Notably, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Athletic Club mentor has his troops sitting at the summit of the table with 15 points from five matches.
