Sunderland: Granit Xhaka criticised by supporters
Granit Xhaka is going through a difficult period with Sunderland. After a convincing first season, the Swiss midfielder has struggled to rediscover his best form since the start of this campaign. His performance in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Brighton, in particular, drew criticism from some supporters.
Criticism of his physical condition
Supporters’ blog Roker Report believes that the 34-year-old currently appears to be « out of form » and is struggling on the pitch. These comments come as Sunderland continue to struggle for consistency in the league. Against Brighton, Xhaka failed to have enough of an impact on the game to prevent his side from losing.
Reduced to ten men after Pascal Struijk was sent off, the visitors nevertheless scored twice to win at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland’s captain is also returning from an unusual international break. He did not feature in Switzerland’s latest matches, amid legal proceedings related to obtaining a fake Covid-19 vaccination certificate.
A legal case that adds to the pressure
On 8 October, Xhaka confirmed that he had been given a suspended financial penalty of 150,000 Swiss francs, with a two-year probationary period. The player admitted the facts and said he accepted responsibility. The case has added an extra-sporting dimension to an already difficult period for the midfielder. However, it cannot on its own explain his recent performances.
Sunderland will need to react quickly after this setback. The club are due to play a European fixture in Portugal soon against Torreense, before facing Bournemouth in the league. The next fixture will represent an opportunity to regain their rhythm and reassure the supporters.
