Tapelo Xoki opens up on lengthy injury layoff
Interview
Orlando Pirates vice-captain Tapelo Xoki has opened up on his lengthy injury layoff that saw him miss the entire 2025/26 campaign, where the club won a domestic treble.
The 31-year-old centre-half was amongst those affected by the road accident on the R21 highway in September 2025 as the Buccaneers returned from Gqeberha after a 3-0 victory over Chippa United in the league.
He last featured for the club at the back end of the 2024/25 season under the interim guidance of assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi following the abrupt exit of Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro.
Now, Xoki has regained full fitness and in contention for selection, having made the matchday squad in the 4-0 rout of Kruger United last month, albeit was an unused substitute.
“I'm grateful to the team for the support they've given me over the past year, to the medical department, they've gone far and beyond to try and assist me to get back, not only physically but also psychologically,” said the Bucs stalwart.
"To be out for a full year is not an easy thing but I'm just excited to help the group in whatever capacity I can, and looking forward to also help the guys make history.
"For us it's about making history and making sure that we better the history of the club.
The former AmaZulu FC skipper reserved special praise for his teammates for not casting him aside during his spell on the sidelines, and acknowledged the impeccable work by the medical department in his rehabilitation.
“Being injured is not only physical, it's a lot mental than the body. Firstly, there has to be that trust between the mind and the body - the mind has to trust what the body needs to do for you to feel like you are yourself again,” Xoki added.
"For me that's where I give credit to our physios, they were not only treating the body but also they were counselling me most of the time. And I also have to give credit to the teammates of mine.
"They've never made me feel like I'm an outsider. They've never made me feel like I've been out for that long. So, I've always felt part of the team with my contribution, even though I'm not playing it's always been appreciated.
"So, that helps in terms of making me feel confident and making me feel appreciated and part of the team. So, it's a great feeling but now we're playing a final, it's not really about me.
"It's about the team, it's about everyone of us being ready to contribute to the team and I'm sure every guy that's in the changing room is ready and willing to put in their 100% for the club.
With the humdinger MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns on the horizon, Xoki will be eager to make his first appearance of the current term, with Pirates looking to retain their crown.
