The €100m rescue mission: Inside David Beckham's bid to save fallen French giant

Former England captain & Inter Miami CF co-owner David Beckham could be set to expand his football club portfolio, having emerged as a prominent prospective buyer in a consortium bidding to acquire FC Nantes.

A historic club in freefall

According to French newspaper Ouest-France, Nantes has received at least three formal acquisition offers, two of which originate from investment funds based in the United Kingdom.

High level discussions have repeatedly featured Beckham's name as current owner Waldemar Kita actively explores a sale.

Despite boasting eight Ligue 1 titles, Les Canaris are currently enduring severe sporting and administrative instability. Following relegation from the top flight last season, Nantes sits at the very bottom of Ligue 2 after losing all three of their opening league fixtures.

Supporter frustration has reached boiling point under Kita who purchased the club in 2007. Alongside his son and CEO Franck Kita, his 19 year tenure has been defined by two relegations and 24 managerial changes.

Expanding Beckham’s ownership footprint

A potential deal for Nantes would mark the latest expansion of Beckham’s multi-club ownership portfolio:

• Inter Miami CF- MLS: Option exercised in Feb 2014, official MLS debut in March 2020
• Salford City - EFL: Acquired 10% in Jan 2019, led expanded consortium takeover in May 2025
• FC Nantes (Target) - Ligue 2: Active consortium bid under evaluation

Nantes presents a compelling distressed asset for international investors.

The club retains a celebrated brand, a historically renowned academy system, and a passionate supporter base. However, taking over a club in freefall requires immediate structural intervention.

The prospective owners cannot solely focus on long-term commercialization, the urgent priority must be stabilizing the first team in Ligue 2 to avoid the catastrophic prospect of consecutive relegations.
