Verbal agreement reached between Brighton and Young Boys for Jaouen Hadjam

The Algerian full-back could soon experience the Premier League, as Brighton have reportedly struck a verbal agreement with Young Boys to finalise his transfer.

According to Foot Mercato, Brighton and Young Boys of Bern have reached a verbal agreement for the transfer of Jaouen Hadjam. Both clubs are now working to iron out the final administrative details of the deal. No transfer fee has yet been disclosed for the 23-year-old defender, who is under contract in Switzerland until June 2028.

A season interrupted by a serious injury

Despite a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Hadjam featured in 26 matches across all competitions last season: 20 in the league and six in the Europa League. He netted two goals and provided four assists—impressive stats for a full-back whose campaign was cut short for over four months by a serious injury sustained while on duty with Algeria.

Versatility already showcased with the national team

Primarily deployed on the left, Hadjam can also operate on the right side of defence. Vladimir Petkovic has already utilised him in that position with the Algerian national team to cover for the absence of Youcef Atal. During AFCON 2025, he returned to his preferred left flank before suffering a syndesmosis injury to his left ankle against Burkina Faso. Forced to undergo surgery, he had to make an early exit from his first AFCON tournament.

Three appearances at the 2026 World Cup

Back to full fitness in time, the defender went on to play in three matches at the 2026 World Cup, racking up 107 minutes against Jordan, Austria, and Switzerland. He was notably in the starting lineup for the thrilling 3-3 draw with Austria, before featuring in the elimination match against Switzerland (0-2). A move to Brighton would now represent a significant step up, introducing him to the rigours of the Premier League. His profile had already caught the attention of other English clubs earlier in this transfer window.
