WAFU A U20: Gambia beat Guinea to reach semi-finals
Gambia make a strong statement. At the Stade Ouezzin Coulibaly in Bamako, the Scorpions secured a 2-1 victory on the final matchday of Group A and qualified for the semi-finals of the WAFU A U20 qualifying tournament for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Ghana.
Francis Gomez leads Gambia
The Gambians made the difference in two phases. From a Francis Gomez free kick, Agibou Dibba opened the scoring with a header to net his first goal of the tournament and give his side a 1-0 lead at half-time. After providing the assist, Gomez turned goalscorer in the 52nd minute to double the lead. The man of the match could have helped his team extend their advantage further, but to no avail.
Guinea pulled one back right at the end through Mohamed Camara, making the final minutes nerve-racking.
Guinea qualify despite defeat
Despite the defeat, Syli Junior secured qualification. With 6 points thanks to 1-0 victories over Mali and Liberia, Guinea finish second in the group behind Gambia, the leaders with seven points, and also reach the semi-finals. Gambia finished strongly after drawing 0-0 with Liberia and beating Mali 1-0. They will face the runners-up in Group B, while Guinea will take on the Group B leaders this Sunday, October 25, at Stade Mamadou Konaté at 7 p.m.
