2026 World Cup – Egypt: Hossam Hassan sanctioned by FIFA

FIFA has shown no leniency towards Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, months after the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has been suspended for three matches by FIFA. This follows, in particular, his criticism of the officiating after his team were eliminated by Argentina (2-3). It took place in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

Ibrahim Hassan, the national team director, received the same sanction. Striker Mostafa Zico, who insulted the referee in an interview after the match, has been suspended for five matches.

Egypt wants explanations

Following the announcement of these sanctions, the Egyptian Football Association asked FIFA's disciplinary committee for detailed explanations of the decisions. The aim is to examine the possible avenues of appeal and determine whether it will appeal.

The sanctions could therefore rule the Hassan brothers out of the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Malawi in November, as well as the first fixture of the March international window. Zico, meanwhile, will not be able to play again before June.
