A celebratory weekend ends in tragedy

After starting in Cagliari's Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo on Friday, the squad was granted a weekend off to recover. Trepy, born in 2006, chose to spend his time at a villa in Porto Cervo.

However, disaster struck on Sunday evening. Initial reports indicate that the young Frenchman who does not know how to swim, found himself in the deep end of the villa's pool.

He struggled silently and submerged before bystanders noticed the unfolding emergency, pulled him from the water, and administered urgent first aid.

He was subsequently airlifted to the hospital via helicopter.

Critical condition in intensive care

The teenager is currently facing a critical battle in the intensive care unit at the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari.

Medical examinations and CT scans revealed significant amounts of fluid in his lungs, which has severely compromised his oxygen exchange. Due to his critical respiratory condition, doctors made the decision to place Trepy in a medically induced coma placing him under constant observation to ease his suffering and allow his body to respond to the intensive treatment.

Cagliari issue statement of support

The Serie A club has not stood by idly, immediately issuing an official statement to confirm they are closely monitoring the situation alongside the hospital and the player's family.

"At this moment, all our thoughts are with Yael and his family" the club's statement read.

Cagliari emphasized the necessity of respecting the privacy of the player and his relatives during this agonizing period while committing to provide further health updates as soon as they become available.

Trepy remains under strict 24 hour medical surveillance in Sassari as doctors work around the clock to stabilize his respiratory system and clear the fluid from his lungs. Cagliari's medical staff will continue to liaise directly with the intensive care unit, and the club will issue official updates regarding his condition when appropriate.
