Aden McCarthy scores first Sabah goal in Dortmund UCL defeat
Aden McCarthy scored his first goal for Sabah FK as the Azerbaijani champions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.
The 22-year-old centre-half restored parity with a glancing header six minutes before the break, canceling out Serhou Guirassy's opener in the 10th minute.
Guirassy completed his brace in the 53rd minute, with McCarthy making a crucial block to deny the Guinea centre-forward a hatrick on the night.
Sabah, as a result, are in the elimination spots as they dropped to 25th place with three points accumulated, having registered two defeats and one win.
McCarthy, on the other hand, has featured in all three Champions League outings, and has made a total of 11 appearances across all competition.
He joined the Baku-based outfit in July from boyhood club Kaizer Chiefs, who reportedly pocketed a figure worth in the region of € 600, 000 (R11 million).
His current contract is set to run until June 2029 as the Chiefs development product put pen to paper on a three-year deal.
With his team set to swing back to action with a humdinger top-of-the-table clash against 12-time Azerbaijani champions Qarabag, McCarthy will be raring to go.
