AFCON U17 2025: Cameroon holds and halts South Africa
Cameroon and South Africa played to a goalless draw (0-0) on the second day of the group stage of the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, held at Stade Larbi Zaouli.
Defeated on the first day by Burkina Faso (2-1), the young Indomitable Lions of Cameroon entered this clash determined to bounce back in the tournament. On the other side, South Africa, having won against Egypt (4-3) at the start of the competition, aimed for a victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.
From the opening minutes, the young Cameroonians showed offensive intent, putting pressure on the South African defense. However, despite several dangerous incursions, they lacked finishing. The South Africans, defensively solid, managed to contain the Cameroonian attacks and created a few counterattack opportunities. In the 23rd minute, Mlondo appealed for a penalty after a challenge in the box, but the referee waved play on.
In the second half, the pattern remained, with Cameroon dominating but failing to convert chances, while South Africa stood firm defensively. The match ultimately ended in a goalless draw (0-0). The young Bafana Bafana secured a point and maintained the top spot in Group B, pending the match between Burkina Faso and Egypt.
Meanwhile, Cameroon finds itself in a tricky position. A victory in their final group match is crucial for them to continue their journey in this 2025 U17 AFCON.
