Uruguay have turned to a familiar name to steer their senior side, with AUF president Ignacio Alonso confirming that former striker Diego Forlán has been handed the reins. The 47‑year‑old steps in following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure after a underwhelming World Cup showing.
Forlán’s appointment is temporary, running until March 2027, with no long‑term deal on the table for now—largely due to the AUF’s upcoming presidential vote.
His immediate tasks include guiding the team through the September‑November window of 2030 World Cup qualifying, while also doubling up as coach of the U‑20 squad ahead of their Copa América campaign in January 2027.
