Ajax: Tolu Arokodare's heartfelt tribute to Kasper Dolberg
Interview
A goal, but above all a gesture that left a lasting impression. On Saturday, October 10, against NEC Nijmegen, Tolu Arokodare chose to set aside his personal celebration to pay tribute to Kasper Dolberg.
A shirt to remind Dolberg that he is not alone
After opening the scoring with a header, the Ajax striker held up the Dane's shirt in front of the supporters to show his support following his serious knee injury. Rather than celebrating his goal alone, Arokodare used the moment to send a message to his teammate. For the Nigerian Ajax striker, the injury is all the harder to accept because the Dane had been gradually returning to his best and had started scoring again.
It was my way of showing him my support and showing the supporters that they, too, should encourage him.
Kasper Dolberg, who was injured during the Denmark national team's camp, is preparing for a lengthy rehabilitation period.
Osimhen behind the initiative
Victor Osimhen was behind the tribute. The two strikers discussed Dolberg's situation while together with the Nigerian national team during the international break. Osimhen then suggested that his compatriot make a gesture to support the Dane:
The idea came from Victor Osimhen. Last week, when we were together with the Nigerian national team, he told me that I should do something for Dolberg. So I would particularly like to thank him for that.
Arokodare followed that advice, turning a goal celebration into a symbol of solidarity. Despite the special moment, Ajax were unable to hold on to their lead and drew 1-1 with NEC.
