Al Ahly Demands Foreign Referee for Cairo Derby Against Zamalek
Al Ahly's formally requested the Egyptian football association EFA and the Egyptian premier league EPL to ensure that international officiating crew is appointed for their highly anticipated match against arch rivals Zamalek on Tuesday.
Official Statement from Al Ahly
The club issued statement on its official platforms urging the governing bodies to fulfill their responsibilities and guarantee fair play by assigning foreign referees for the fixture.
“Al Ahly 's sent official letter to the egyptian football association requesting confirmation that the upcoming Cairo derby against Zamalek will be officiated by foreign referee team. The club insists that both the EFA and the EPL assume full responsibility in maintaining the integrity of the competition and ensuring fair competition” the statement read.
The statement also emphasized that Al Ahly has long called for overhaul of the domestic officiating system, citing repeated controversial refereeing decisions that have impacted match outcomes.
Ongoing Controversy Over Referee Selection
Reports suggest that the EFA had initially planned to appoint local referee, potentially Mahmoud Basyouni, for the match, the EPL reportedly agreed to cover the costs of hiring foreign officials leading to tensions between the 2 entitie.
In light of this uncertainty, Al Ahly's escalated the matter reiterating its demand for neutral officiating to uphold the credibility of the league.

The Cairo Derby will mark the opening of the championship round in the egyptian premier league. Al Ahly currently sits 2nd in the standings with 39 point, trailing leaders Pyramids FC 42 point, while Zamalek's in 3rd place with 32 point.
