Antonio van Wyk opens up on Mamelodi Sundowns move

Newly signed Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Antonio van Wyk has opened up on the decision to return to his native South Africa in favour of a move to Chloorkop.

The 24-year-old speedy winger was lured from Austrian Bundesliga outfit SV Ried in a deal worth in the region of € 1 million (R18 million), signing a long-term contract.

He had left his homeland in September 2024 from Stellenbosch FC after helping the team secure their maiden trophy in the topflight with the Carling Knockout Cup.

Van Wyk says the experience he accumulated in Europe massively contributed to the football player he is to date, as he's now deemed fit for the standard at Sundowns.

“Spending time away has been an incredible experience that helped me grow both as a footballer and as a person,” he told the Downs media department.

On the high-profile switch to the reigning African champions, the Stellies academy product attributed the transfer to the club's stature and the winning mentality instilled.

“This is one of the biggest clubs on the continent, a club with a rich history, high standards, and a winning culture,” van Wyk added.

"To the supporters, your passion for this club is unmatched, and I cannot wait to experience that energy on matchday. I'm excited for the for the journey.

With three goals and five assists in 35 matches across all competitions last season, van Wyk will be eager to stake his claim in the star-studded squad at Sundowns.
