Argentina - Benin: “a match everyone will remember”, says Gernot Rohr
Interview
Benin will face Argentina in an exceptional fixture on October 6, 2026. As this friendly approaches, Gernot Rohr is fully aware of the significance of the occasion, particularly with the prospect of Lionel Messi playing one of his final matches for La Albiceleste.
A fixture the Guépards will never forget
Speaking to BIP Radio de Cotonou, Gernot Rohr highlighted the significance of this match for the Benin national team.
This is obviously a great football match in which the Benin team will be able to learn a lot. It will be a fantastic and exciting experience for all the players and the entire technical staff.
The coach considers this clash a rare opportunity for his players to test themselves against a top-level national team. But the context will also give the evening a special dimension. “It is an honour for all of us, for Benin and for the Guépards, to be able to play this match that everyone will remember,” Rohr added, referring in particular to the tribute that could be paid to Messi.
Facing Messi, a unique experience
The prospect of facing Lionel Messi obviously adds another dimension to this fixture. The Argentine could appear before the Monumental crowd one last time with La Albiceleste, giving the match a special emotional context. For Benin, this clash will above all be an opportunity for several players to experience an atmosphere and level of demand they are not accustomed to.
Rohr hopes his young players will be able to learn from this experience: “our young players will be able to learn a lot from this match.” The Benin coach therefore wants to turn this prestigious occasion into a genuine collective experience.
