Arsenal and Atlético Madrid battle for Cristian Romero

Diego Simeone’s top target at Atlético Madrid, Cristian Romero, is now also on Arsenal’s radar as they look to bolster their defense.

Cristian Romero is set on leaving Tottenham this summer, aiming for a return to La Liga. The door to Barcelona has closed, with the Catalan giants not planning to reinforce in his position. That leaves Atlético Madrid as his preferred destination, with mutual interest between the Argentine defender and Diego Simeone.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal have entered the race. The reigning Premier League champions are looking to capitalize on the possible departure of the 28-year-old, but Tottenham are refusing to strengthen their traditional rivals. That keeps Atlético in pole position, with Inter Milan still monitoring the situation.

Arsenal now chasing the double

The Gunners have already signed Piero Hincapié on a permanent deal after his loan, goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer, and winger Christos Tzolis for around €40 million. Adding Romero would bring experience and character to a backline weakened by William Saliba’s fitness issues.

Arsenal have just reclaimed the Premier League title after 22 long years. Having lost the Champions League final to PSG on penalties, the London club are determined to defend their domestic crown and finally lift the elusive Champions League trophy.

Romero to fix Atlético’s leaky defense

Fourth in La Liga, losing finalists in the Copa del Rey, and eliminated by Arsenal in the Champions League semifinals, Atlético ended the season without silverware. Most worryingly, the Colchoneros conceded 74 goals across all competitions—a record high under Simeone.

A 2022 World Cup winner and 2026 finalist, Romero has made 156 appearances for Tottenham. Under contract until 2029, the Spurs captain brings the aggression, anticipation, and ball-playing ability Simeone craves to rebuild his backline.
