Aston Villa officially confirmed on Friday the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham. The Congolese right-back joins the Villans on a season-long loan deal, with a conditional obligation to buy.

Wan-Bissaka returns to the Premier League

After being relegated to the Championship with West Ham, the 28-year-old defender immediately finds himself back in the English top flight. He had joined the Hammers in 2024 after five seasons at Manchester United, where he racked up nearly 200 appearances.

His Premier League experience is a major asset for Aston Villa, who continue to strengthen their squad ahead of a particularly busy campaign. Wan-Bissaka also boasts international pedigree with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, whom he represented at the 2026 World Cup.

A new option behind Matty Cash

The arrival of the defender above all provides Unai Emery with another solution at right-back. Wan-Bissaka will compete with Matty Cash and allow the Spanish manager greater flexibility to rotate his squad. This move also comes after Kosta Nedeljkovic left on loan, further underlining the need for an experienced player in this position.

Aston Villa now have a period to assess his performance within Emery’s system. The first real indicator will be his minutes on the pitch in the coming weeks: if he quickly wins a starting spot, the competition with Cash could become much more than a simple squad rotation.
