Kamaldeen Sulemana will be out of action for several weeks. Injured on Saturday during Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Schalke 04, the Ghanaian international has suffered a grade two medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in his left knee. Medical tests performed after the match confirmed the severity of the injury, and the forward is expected to be sidelined for between two and three months.

Sulemana picked up the injury just minutes after coming on in the 46th minute. After twisting his knee, he tried to continue but ultimately had to be substituted in the 62nd minute. This setback comes as the winger was building his fitness with Atalanta ahead of the 2026-2027 season.

His absence comes just days before the start of the Italian league season, depriving the club of a player who brings pace, directness, and depth down the flanks. His style, built on explosive runs and one-on-one situations, offers a unique attacking threat.

An absence that could weigh heavily

This spell on the sidelines limits the coach’s options in the opening weeks of the campaign. The club will have to cope without Sulemana as their attacking chemistry is still taking shape.

The situation could also impact Atalanta’s transfer plans. The club had been considering selling the player this summer, but a two to three month layoff is likely to cool the interest of potential suitors. As a result, Atalanta may be forced to hold on to a player they had been planning to move on.

An encouraging previous season

Yet Sulemana is coming off a campaign where he steadily grew in importance. Arriving in Bergamo in January 2025 from Southampton, the Ghanaian international injected pace and versatility into Atalanta’s attack. Able to operate on both wings, he stood out especially for his ability to take on defenders and stretch the opposition.

He was expected to use the new season to confirm his progress and find greater consistency. This injury now halts his momentum just as he was hoping to further cement his place in the Bergamo project.
