Atlético de Madrid 2-0 Manchester United: Lookman finishes off the adrift Red Devils
Manchester United slumped again, beaten 2-0 by Atlético in Madrid, for a fourth defeat this season in all competitions.
The scenario was almost predictable. Manchester United lost 2-0 on Tuesday evening away to Atlético de Madrid, on matchday two of the Champions League. It was another poor performance from a Red Devils side that still gives the impression of searching for its identity.
The Manchester side were caught cold after just one minute of play, with Pablo Barrios taking advantage of a ball played in behind the defence to give Atlético the lead. For nearly 15 minutes, United were under pressure without really making their presence felt before slightly raising their game.
United respond, but fail to really trouble Atlético
Manchester United's best chance of the first half fell to Bryan Mbeumo, who was played through against Jan Oblak. The Slovenian goalkeeper won the one-on-one duel and prevented United from getting back into the game. Diego Simeone had warned that the Red Devils remained dangerous, but his players largely controlled proceedings.
After the break, Manchester United showed a little more attacking intent without managing to seriously trouble the Madrid defence. At the other end, Julián Álvarez hit the post before the match definitively turned.
Yoro sent off, Lookman finishes off Manchester United
During a lightning-fast Atlético counter-attack, Leny Yoro brought down his opponent while the move was still developing. Lookman missed his one-on-one with Senne Lammens, but the referee went back to the VAR before sending off the French defender. Reduced to ten men, United eventually conceded a second goal a few minutes later, when Lookman scored to make it 2-0 and definitively buried the English side's hopes.
This defeat is already Manchester United's fourth this season in all competitions, less than three months after the start of the campaign. The situation is becoming difficult to ignore.
Michael Carrick under increasing pressure
The question of Michael Carrick's future will inevitably come back onto the agenda. Week after week, Manchester United are showing the same weaknesses: a lack of control, little attacking threat and a team unable to respond consistently when trailing.
After Ruben Amorim's failure, the decision to appoint Carrick has not produced the hoped-for revival so far. For a club of this stature, the board could quickly be forced to reconsider its position and look towards more experienced coaches who are available or could be approached, such as Antonio Conte or Eddie Howe.
