Returning to form
Espérance de Tunis will rely heavily on the veteran attacker as they navigate a challenging two legged tie against Al-Swehly in the second preliminary round of Africa's premier club competition.
Belaïli recently returned to competitive football following a nine month absence due to a cruciate ligament injury. He has already begun to regain his rhythm in the current Tunisian league season, making five appearances and contributing to two goals.
He found the net against AS Marsa in Gameweek 3 and provided an assist against Olympique Béja in Gameweek 5.
A historic continental record
The 34 year old holds a remarkable record in the CAF Champions League, having contributed to 47 goal across 61 appearance in the competition.
This exceptional tally places him far ahead of his closest compatriots in the all time ranking for Algerian players.
His continental statistics were built during his spells with two major North African clubs:
- USM Alger: 3 goal and 5 assist in 8 match
- Espérance de Tunis: 15 goal and 24 assist in 53 match
As Espérance prepare for their upcoming preliminary round fixtures, Belaïli will aim to improve his match fitness while adding to his continental statistics.
Although the player's market value recently dropped to €1.2 million according to Transfermarkt, his extensive experience will be a vital asset for the Tunisian club as they attempt to successfully navigate the preliminary stages and secure their place in the group stage.
